A low ranking male member of society in medieval times was expendable to say the least. Death lurks around every corner from various sources and people wind up dead often enough that should one person disappear the people who knew him try to forget as they have more important things to worry about. Themselves mostly. Should you wish to start low and rise through the ranks even a slave can gain a position on a raiding vessels shield wall, just don't expect comfort and luxury to fall into your lap.
