You have the whole day in front of you, no need to rush things.

"Okay, does everyone-" you stop yourself. You were about to ask if they had everything they needed for school. That might not have gone over well. You try to come up with a way to ask that isn't a yes or no question.

"Does everyone what?" ask Emily.

"I think he wants to know if we're all ready to go, right Chad," says Gwen with a wink. "But he was afraid we'd say we were ready when we really weren't."

"Why would we do that?" asks Emily.

"I'm not done with my cereal," adds Bree.

"Hurry up or we'll be late," you tell Bree. She starts wolfing down the cereal.

"People do weird things when they're in love," says Gwen to Emily. "It's like you're under some kind of spell." Jeez, how fucking smart is Gwen? Why is she getting crap grades if she's the only one who can figure out not only that something is going on, but also what is basically going on. She has to be some kind of genius.

"Okay," says Bree with a mouth full of cereal, "I'm ready."

"Alright, let's go," you say, herding everyone out to your car. Your mother has already left, leaving the driveway clear as you all pile in. Bree sits in the back in her last booster seat, Emily taking up the other back seat, with you and Gwen in the front. It's an uneventful drive as you let Bree out at her elementary school, then drive Emily to the middle school, finally driving yourself and Gwen to the high school. You actually arrive about fifteen minutes before the bell somehow. As you pull up and park, you notice the gang of popular kids at the picnic tables where they hang out before school. Unlike normal, they are split into two roughly equal groups. Gary and Dana are at your normal table with a portion of your "friends" while others seem to be avoiding them like they were lepers.

"Hey Chad," says Gwen softly, "I'm going to use the bathroom before class." She steps out of the car, and walks, not skates, toward the school; looking back over her shoulder briefly with a smile as she does. Well, that's different. She obviously wants you to join her.
