You both look at the chaos of Lily’s possessions scattered all over the floor, and burst into a fit of giggles. With the ice broken you help Lily to pick everything up, pack it away and secure it in the luggage racks. She asks you where your luggage is, but you dodge the question, not wanting to show off that you have a wealth of books and magic items in a silver cigarette case in your coat pocket.

Lily’s meagre possessions were scattered all over the floor of your compartment until you helped her to pick them up

You talk to Lily and find out that the poor girl is completely clueless. She has been raised by well-meaning Muggles her whole life, and only found out a couple of months ago that magic even existed. You also notice something else about her, her right eye is slightly cloudy, making you wonder if she can see out of it properly.

“Lily,” you ask her, kindly, but directly, “what’s the matter with your eye?”

“Um, my eye? Yes, I can’t see out of that eye. I’m blind in that eye. But my other eye works just fine.”

Lily seems to be quite embarrassed that you noticed she is partially blind

You sense that she’s very shy about being blind in one eye. It might explain a little of her clumsiness too, although some of that appears to be her arms and legs. She’s an inch or so taller than you, and you are tall for your age.

“That’s interesting,” you tell her, “Did you know that all the best seers and oracles of the magical world have been partly or fully blind? It’s said it opens up the third eye and gives you the gift of foresight.”

You feel the monster stirring insight you. We’re those his words? Did you know that before you said it?

“Oh yes!” Lily says excitedly, “that’s what Professor Trelawney said when she came to see me. She said that’s why all my dreams kept coming true, because I’ve got The Sight as she calls it. She told me to stop telling normal people, Muggles, about my dreams, because it was scaring them.”

“Trelawney. She’s a Divination teacher isn’t she?” You ask Lily.

“Yes, she is. Have you met her?” She replies.

“A long time ago,” you say, as the monster starts to use your mouth to speak, remembering the last time he met her.

Please you think to yourself, please let me talk to her. Just for a little bit…

“So, Professor Trelawney explained all about magic, and me being a witch and a seer, and about Hogwarts, and then she took me to a place called Diagon Alley, and a nice man called Ollivander helped to find me a wand…”

Lily pulls out a plain yew wand, unadorned and simple in a way.

Revelio Magicae” you intone, revealing magical auras in the compartment. Your own wand and Ring of Protection glow brightly like embers in a fire, whereas Lily’s wand has a faint glow. Then you look at her again.

The quintessence in her body is dazzling, bright currents of golden sparks, flowing through her veins and along her meridians, swirling in her Chakras. The girl is full of flowing and ripening magical power, and hasn’t the slightest idea about any of it.

“You’re… beautiful…” you gasp, staring at her and right through her at her pattern. You want to cast Revelio Animus next, to see her Pattern, her Soul and her Prime Anchor, but then you realise you are staring right at her.

“Um, thanks,” she says, blushing.

“You are full of magic. My spell shows it to me. I can teach you how to cast it if you like? Professor Trelawney did the right thing by finding you. Hogwarts is where you belong.”

Lily doesn’t say anything, but smiles back at you shyly. Before either of you can speak again, you are interrupted by the compartment door sliding open. You look up, and see that it is your friends, Pansy Parkinson and Daphne Greengrass.

“There you are Emily,” Pansy begins, “we’ve been searching the whole train for you. We’ve got some seats up near the dining car, with Draco and… oh, who is this?”

“I’m Lily,” says Lily, holding out her hand for Pansy to shake, her shyness apparently banished for the moment, “Lily Smith.”

Smith?,” Pansy says, giving Lily a mean look of disgust, as though the girl’s name has left a bad taste in her mouth.

“Oh Pansy, don’t be silly,” you snap at her, “Lily is a new girl, she’s only just found out she’s a witch, we should be nice to her…”

You hear Daphne mumbling something about Mudblood under her breath and you stare at her fiercely.

“Yes, well we’re pleased to meet you Lily,” says Pansy, flashing one of her fake smiles at Lily, and still not taking her hand, which slowly seems to wilt.

“We’re up near the dining car, with Draco, if you want to join us Emily,” says Daphne.

“Sure,” you reply, “I’ll come up later.”

Pansy and Daphne look at you for a moment, then back at Lily, then leave the compartment and wander up the corridor, gossiping shamelessly.

“Are they, friends of yours?” Lily asks.

“Kind of,” you tell her.
