"Yes, I didn't think you did." You said. "I thought it sounded strange. Someone must have been trying to lie in order to get you in trouble."

She looked at you with wide eyes like she could hardly believe what she was hearing.

"I was watching you to see how you answered those questions. It seems like you're telling the truth." You told her. "You can go back to class for now."

It took her a second to realize what you had said. She just stayed sitting in her spot with her back straight while she regarded you like some kind of strange creature about to swallow her whole.

After what felt like forever, but was probably closer to around five seconds, she finally slid off the front of the chair. She did not leave though, she just stood there in front of your desk and looked at you.

"Umm... thank you." She said. She still looked kind of dazed, like she couldn't believe what was happening and was just waiting for it all to go wrong somehow.

"It's fine." You said. "You had better get back to class before you miss too much. I'll come out with you and ask Ms. Varano to give you a note."

You hit the buzzer for the door to open and Rachel allows herself to be guided out of your office. Ms. Varano seems somewhat surprised. "Well, that was certainly fast." She said. It definitely looks like she was expecting a different outcome. You wonder how she would take it if you told her you were letting Rachel off without a punishment.
