Life Hacks/Talk to the other kids’ parents and round up everyone who was recording

Well, you figure that for something like this the police are probably going to be very interested to see the video evidence you managed to record. You take a quick glance around. The guy in the top row is still recording, probably trying to get every single second he can. He is probably going to stay there a while. You scan the gathering crowd of scornful looking fathers and mothers who seem to be having just a little too much fun making derisive comments about this guy, although you can’t help but bluster at the equally admiring comments about you. You do not see anyone actively recording, but you do catch a few hints from body language from one woman. You focus in closer, and then indeed you hear it. “Yeah, I got it all from about the point where he brought him to his knees. That was crazy, like out of a movie or something!” As she said this, she was waving around her phone. None of those things by themselves say she was recording, but together you are pretty sure she was, and there is no harm in asking.

“Hey,” you say, coming up behind the woman, “were you recording what happened with your phone?”

She seems a little bit surprised when she realizes you, the man of their focus, had approached her to talk to her. She seems a little flustered at first, but she quickly tries to get her bearings and respond to you. “Ummm.. uhhh.. wha.. yeah!” She says, “You were great there, that was fantastic the way you stood up for your sister. What was that you did to him to make him collapse like that?”

“Uhhh… well, I really just bent his wrist backward,” you tell her, “the wrist is just not supposed to bend that way, kind of like that game ‘mercy’ that some younger kids play where they try to test their strength pushing each other’s wrists back.”

“Wow, do kids do things like that these days!?” Some other woman in the gaggle of mothers blusters, “kids do some crazy stuff.”

“Uhh… yeah.. well...” you cut back in, “anyway, it is the same concept, I just used my phone and a good hold with my other hand to get more leverage on him. It is really technique for the most part.”

“Wow! Do you do some kind of martial arts or something!?” The woman with the phone asks.

“Well… something like that,” you say. Yeah, you are pretty much a master of every martial art ever invented, but you can’t really tell them about that. You haven’t actually spent a single day in a martial arts studio in your life, so how are you going to really explain your level of expertise? “Anyway,” you continue, “I was wanting to ask because this guy’s presumably more level-headed buddies are going to be here soon and they are probably going to want to see the video.”

“Oh!” She responds. “Yes, of course.”

“Anyway,” you say, “they can’t actually demand you hand over your phone or anything, but they are probably going to try to ask you something like that. I wanted to upload all the videos to the cloud so that I can just mail it to them.”

“Oh! Sure!” She says. With your help then, she manages to connect to a cloud storage system that you had set up before for your own purposes, and the little video she has is being uploaded into your control. While you are helping her, you do the same thing with the video that you have.

Next is the guy at the top of the bleachers. He seems to be pretty young, too young to be a father of one of the kids down there, but an older brother is not out of the question. While you say he is young, that is not quite accurate. He is definitely older than you. Probably 18 or 19. He could be in his early 20s. He says he heard your conversation with the woman, but it takes some convincing for him to give up his own video.

“Hey man, I appear in that video,” you say to him.

“Yeah, well, free public domain. No expectation of privacy. I can film what I want.” He responds.

“Yeaaahhh… all that stuff is true...” you say, “you are certainly well within your rights to keep the video and do whatever you want with it.” It is so obvious what he wants to do with it. He wants to be the one to upload the next viral video of some police officer being an ass-hole. “However, if you don’t want to share your video, it means your video is the only part of the picture you are going to have.”

“Huh?” He responds. In answer, you hold up your phone with a smug smile as you wave it back and forth in front of him.

“If I’m not mistaken,” you say, “I believe I am the one who has the best coverage of how this whole thing began, complete with commentary about what happened before the incident. You may have a good angle of what happened after things got physical, but I have the best material for how this whole thing started.” You can see he is starting to salivate as he looks at your phone. No doubt, you definitely have his attention. “You are familiar with the Perturbed students of 1960 protest at the university of Missouri right? The one where the media professor actually kicked a student reporter out because she didn’t want to be recorded?” You ask him. “The first person version of the story is always the one that blows up the biggest. If we were to both upload our videos, mine would overshadow yours completely.”

“Uhh...” Is all he is able to say. You seem to have completely hooked him now.

“How about this?” You say, “You upload your copy to the cloud storage I have and share your contact information with me and we can work together. I have some good video editing skills, I will send you a finished copy of the video. Actually, I will even allow you to be the one to upload it. It actually works out better for me that way.”

“Ok, sure,” he says, now more than happy with this deal. “Uhh… yeah, just give me the address and I will upload it after I’m done. A video upload will take a while. I want to get what happens with the other police officers when they get here.”

“All right,” you agree. About this time, you see the police car pulling up in the parking lot of the park. Looks like it’s show time.
