Life Hacks/Try and argue the point, you don’t want to stay under your mother’s thumb!
You let out a heavy sigh. You are tired of being treated this way by your mom. Before, you had to bear with it because you did not have the argumentation skills or knowledge to see through the flaws in her argument, or the confidence or argumentation ability to capitalize on those flaws. Now though, you are prepared to cut your way right through the bullshit in order to end her reign of terror.
“Mom, I think you are misunderstanding something,” you tell her, causing her to stagger a bit. She does not interrupt you though and she waits for you to finish. “I was not exactly planning to become a police officer, but being in the junior police academy is something that would look fairly good on a resume both for a college application and in getting into politics. It’s a pretty good means to an end, and it doesn’t mean I am actually going to become an officer when I turn 18.”
Once again, this causes your mom’s brain to grind to a halt. She may be vicious and she may make flawed arguments, but one good thing about her is that she is not irrational. She can tell when the facts are not on her side and when her stance is set on a flimsy foundation.
Finally, she lets out a sigh. “Alright, we can talk about it.” She says. “But if I agree to this thing with Billy, we have to agree that you joining the police force after you get out of highschool is off the table, alright?”
“Deal,” you agree to the modified terms.
“I have to say I’m surprised though,” she says, “when did you become so good at negotiating?”
“Ahh…” What can you say? That you gave yourself those skills through a reality altering piece of software?
“Hmmm…, well then, how about you introduce me to this officer that’s trying to scalp you from the future high-powered job you are destined for.”
With this, she begins marching off, but she turns to look back at you after getting a few feet ahead, looking somewhat prideful. Even in her usual stony disapproving face that seems to be frozen in a permanent scowl, you can see the sine of a smile meant for you managing to peek through. It is more in her eyes and the tilt of her chin than anything else, but it is definitely there.
You look down encouragingly at Billie, and give a smile that she mirrors back at you with a weak one of her own before determinedly clutching your hand and moving along beside you. She shrinks and whimpers and holds herself more tightly to you as you pass your mom. She may have started out by not wanting to piss her off and loose the opportunity to live with you, but now it is quite clear she has learned to really fear your mother in the way that you used to fear her, and she is trying to hide from your mother by attempting to melt into your hip. You simply ignore this and carry on, marching right into the police station.
Now then, as things stand it might be better for you to be the one to do the talking, but you know at this point you could probably also just sick your mom on them and it might be a bit gratifying to see her interceding with her usual take-no-prisoners attitude to your benefit for once.
