You enter Twilfit and Tattings, an upperclass clothing shop for the discerning pureblood families of London. As you enter, you hear one of the assistants helping another girl to choose some clothes, also for Hogwarts. You are glad you came this week, as all of next week the whole area will be overrun by Hogwarts students and their families buying last minute school supplies.
You walk around the store, slowly looking at the clothing and taking in the atmosphere. The air smells faintly of lavender and Earl Grey tea. You are only there for a moment before another woman approaches you, who appears to be the proprietor.
“Oh Miss Lestrange, how lovely to see you,” she greats you, gently placing her hands on your shoulders. It appears she knows you from before, but for some reason you can’t seem to find her name.
“Likewise,” you respond curtly, but giving her your best attempt at a sweet smile. “I was wondering what you could do for me for clothes for Hogwarts? I need formal and casual, uniform and weekend wear. And I really need something to distinguish me from the other riff-raff they are admitting there nowadays.”
“Oh I know,” the woman agrees, keeping her hands on your shoulders and gently manuevering you toward some expensive girls clothes toward the rear of the shop. “It’s shocking who they let in nowadays. Why just the other day we had a muggle born girl come in here. Totally clueless, and with just a handful of coins that Hogwarts gives to such charity cases…”
The proprietor, a Mrs Carson, exchanges pleasantries and gossip with you, and discretely encourages you to try on and buy several sets of clothing. She gets her assistant to make you both a cup of tea and you spend over an hour there, looking at yourself in the mirror as you try on different clothes and outfits. Most of them are normal clothing, but of the finest quality. Only once you have been there for a while do you ask about enchanted clothing.
“Of course,” Mrs Carson replies, “we provide a number of enchantments on a bespoke basis. The main thing I would suggest are some basic protection charms againt minor jinxes and hexes. You would not believe what some of the ghastly boys at Hogwarts will do, levitating girls’ skirts to see their underwear, magically snapping bra straps. There was even one young man who made all of a girls clothes vanish, in front of all her classmates. He was expelled of course…”
You listen and nod kindly as you drink your tea. Mrs Carson clearly considers you as a friend as well as a customer, and you agree to have custom enchantments added to most of your clothing. The bill will be enormous, but you decide that only the best will do for you, as a pureblood witch.
“I was wondering,” you say, placing your teacup back in the saucer, “could you, or one of your suppliers make me a pair of quietened boots? I’m thinking black leather, knee high, although I’m not sure if that passes the uniform dress code or not? I’m thinking muffliato, not full quietus. Is it also possible to enchant them so that they grow as I do? Like my mothers cloak?”
“Oh most certainly Miss Emily,” Mrs Carson exclaims, most certainly ecstatic at how much money you are spending. They will need to be specially made, and won’t be ready for a few weeks. I can have them sent to Hogwarts directly by Owl though. Would you like to look at different styles with me? We can even make a shifting shoe that resizes but also changes style to suit dress codes, so you can always be wearing your muffliato footwear, as a shoe, a boot, a slipper, or even high heels.”
You spend nearly another hour with her, measuring your feet and looking at styles of footwear, before she fits you for a new brassiere to accommodate your growing bosom. You finally calculate the bill and authorise for the money to be transferred directly from your family account in Gringotts.
“Oh Miss Emily, it has been wonderful to see you,” Mrs Carson exclaims, “And may I say, you look enchanting in your mother’s Shadow Cloak. You are growing up to be every bit as beautiful a young woman as Sofia was.”
You thank her and smile, but inwardly, the reminder of your mother Sofia’s untimely death in the last Wizarding War, still hurts you, even though you were too young to remember it at the time.
Where do you go next?
- Grincott’s Goblin Bank to see your wealth in your family vault
- Ollivander the Wand Maker to see if you can use your mother’s wand or if a wand of your own would be better
- Stowe and Packer’s on Carkitt Market to buy a magical bag or trunk
- Cogg and Bell’s Clockmakers in Carkitt Market to inquire about your broken Time Turner
- Twilfit & Tattings Clothing to ask about enchanted clothing and footwear
Or are you ready to go home now?
