Gemma leads you back into the House Slytherin Common Room, where the whole House has assembled, over one hundred and sixty students in total. Your Housemaster, Professor Snape, is waiting and once you have all arrived, begins a welcome speech.
You have little interest in listening to a boring welcome speech, and decide to look around the room, observing your fellow Slytherins. You notice that Gemma is smiling at a solidly built boy aged about fifteen or sixteen, who is grinning back at her with a look of undisguised lust in his eyes. Everyone else appears to be focused on Snape, but there is clearly something going on between these two.
You notice that Tracy Davis is gazing at you, but when you catch her eye, she looks away shyly, pretending she wasn’t looking at you. Her short hair and something about her demeanour make her seem like a bit of a Tomboy. Could she be attracted to you? If so, the feeling is mutual.
Looking at Niamh Lovegood, you notice a number of fine white scars on her arms, as well as a few pink scars from more serious cuts. Are those self inflicted? Why would she cut herself? The girl seems angry and pre-occupied about something.
You notice that Daphne has made a point of sitting right next to your cousin Blaise, on a very overcrowded leather sofa, so that she is pressed up right against him, her leg almost draped over his lap. Blaise seems to be being a gentleman about it, it has a big smile on his face.
You can pick out some other couples, boyfriends and girlfriends, sat next to one another or holding hands. Some may have just been reunited after a long time spent apart from one another. You wonder what it’s like to be in love, to really be in love with another person.
Then, you look at Lily sitting next to you. She is so sweet and innocent, and practically clueless about the magical world. You know you have to look after her, as it’s your fault she’s in House Slytherin, and not a damned Hufflepuff. She notices you looking at her and smiles at you. You smile back and look away, embarrassed that this girl who you only met this morning is making your heart melt.
After a while, Snape is done with his speech and everyone claps and cheers. Some prefects give a speech, and the boy who was eying up Gemma introduces himself as Marcus Flint, Captain of the House Quidditch Team. He says they will be running trials for new Team members in a few weeks time. There are a few other announcements, but they are all dreadfully boring, and you are pleased when it’s time for bed, as it’s been a very long and tiring day.
