In the morning, you wake up to find Lily has already gotten dressed and is cleaning her teeth.
“Wake up sleepy-head,” she says smiling at you, “you’d better rush if you want a shower, hurry up or we’ll miss breakfast.”
You sit up, rubbing your eyes and stretching. Yawning, you get out of bed and head for the door, bleary eyed and half-asleep still.
Lily just stares at you, standing there naked with your hair all messed up. She giggles and throws you your black silk bathrobe. You smile and blow her a kiss before heading to the shower.
Standing under the steaming hot water, you slowly wake up properly. Did you and Lily really have sex last night? You did, you realise to yourself, and it was amazing.
There’s another thing. The monster. He seems to be gone. He was with you yesterday, but he was bored of magic lessons and “little girls” as he thinks of you, and crawled away to sleep. That and hiding whenever Harry was nearby. Then, after you ran around in the rainstorm with Lily, he didn’t come back. You and Lily spent an incredible few hours together, chasing, and kissing and making love to each other, and the Monster wasn’t anywhere to be seen. He didn’t come back in the night, and he’s not come back this morning. You wonder if…
He is still there, sleeping, somewhere in the depths of your consciousness, curled up inside your soul like a parasite. Until yesterday, you thought he might always be there, only giving you tiny snatches of freedom when he got bored or needed to rest, but then you got most of a day without him.
Perhaps you can learn to live with him somehow? Maybe he won’t do all the horrible things he plots and schemes about? Maybe, if you can make friends with Hermione, he won’t decide to kill her? Maybe you can persuade Harry and Neville and the others not to try and fight the Dark Lord, then he won’t kill them either?
Maybe, just maybe, you can love Lily and keep her safe from him.

Over breakfast, you and Lily sit next to each other, eating in silence. Whenever you meet each others eyes, one or other of you blushes or starts to giggle, and that sets the other one off, until you are both laughing out loud.
“What are you to laughing about?” Pansy asks, scowling at you.
You look at each other, and your eyes share a silent joke, knowing that she’d never believe the truth. You both collapse into laughter again, and Pansy rolls her eyes and walks off.
“Hey Emily,” an older Slytherin boy whom you don’t know suddenly asks you, “is it true you were riding your broom around inside the castle last night?”
“Umm,” you say, looking him up and down with mild distaste, in contrast with the love and laughter “yes?”
“Haha wow!” He says laughing, “I’m amazed Snape didn’t have you expelled! Don’t do that again though Emily. We’re glad you’re a Slytherin and don’t want you kicked out. You made us all laugh telling off the Sorting Hat and the Headmaster the other night.”
“Thanks,” you say, not really caring for popularity.
“If you’re good on your Broom, you should try out for the Quidditch Team. We need a new seeker. Ask Marcus about it,” the boy says, pointing toward Marcus Flint.
“I’ll… consider it,” you say moodily.
“Hey Marcus!” The boy yells, “Emily says she’ll try out for the team!”
Marcus looks over, then realising it’s you, and scowls a little before returning to his conversation. Seeing Marcus makes you remember the things you did while the monster was awake. You feel a pang of guilt, but also a tingle of illicit excitement.
A bell rings, meaning you have fifteen minutes until your first class of the day. You have a full day of lessons and plenty of other things to be getting on with.
What do you do next?
