Not wanting to be late for your next class, you rush ahead with Lily and are the first two students to enter an empty classroom. Even your teacher isn’t here yet.
You take a seat near the back of the class, hoping to be able to snooze for a little while, as you are still exhausted from lack of sleep. You ask Lily to keep an eye out for Professor Snape, and as soon as you lay your head down to rest, he storms into the classroom and addresses the students.
“There will be no foolish wand-waving or silly incantations in this class,” Snape begins, “As such, I don't expect many of you to appreciate the subtle science and exact art that is potion-making. However, for those select few who possess, the predisposition... I can teach you how to bewitch the mind and ensnare the senses. I can tell you how to bottle fame, brew glory, and even put a stopper in death.”
By now, most of the class is sitting up and listening. You can’t really be bothered though. To you, potions were something you simply buy, or have someone make for you. You ignore the Professor as he lectures Harry Potter on various herbs and bezoars and such like, and try to relax for a moment. You place your chin on your hands and rest your eyes, just for a moment…
“Lestrange,” Snape snaps at you, and your eyes fly open.
“Are you so rude as to actually fall asleep in my lesson girl?” He asks you, “well?”
“I’m…” you start, noticing that the rest of the Slytherin students are looking really annoyed with you, “I’m sorry Professor.”
“Sorry?” Snape parrots back at you, “Sorry isn’t good enough girl. Come down here and sit at the front of the class, so that you will find it easier to keep your eyes open.”
Snape indicates a seat toward the front of the class. You reluctantly pick up your text book and move toward the front. It is closer to the Potter boy, which means you have to hide yourself for a moment or an horrendous headache will strike you both. To hell with it, you think, let the girl suffer Snape’s wrath. I can go to sleep anyway, let her stay awake.
You feel the monster withdraw, and the threatened headache recede. Harry looks at you, a little confused for some reason, no doubt having noticed his discomfort in your presence. You sit down and start to read from the text book as your Professor instructs you.
You try your best to learn about potions, but it all seems very complicated. Most of the other students are struggling too, with the notable exception of Hermione Granger, who seems to have read the text book cover to cover before she even arrived at Hogwarts. Occasionally, one of the monster’s memories about potions surfaces in your consciousness, which helps you to grasp the subject a little more easily, as does copying Hermione and asking her questions. As the lesson goes on, you actually start to enjoy yourself, and apply yourself to making the potion as instructed by the Professor. You also start to think that making friends with Hermione might not be such a bad idea after all.
Toward the end of the lesson, you hear a cry from the back of the class.
“Haha,” you hear Draco Malfoy laugh, “Look at Lily, she’s spilled her potion everywhere! The stupid Mud-blood”
“You knocked it over!” Lily cries, sounding as though she’s on the verge of tears.
“It’s true Professor,” Jiao-Jie says, defending Lily, “he’s been bullying her all lesson and calling her names. Calling her Silly-Lily and Mud-blood.”
Suddenly you feel ice-cold fury in your veins, you draw your wand and point it at Malfoy, preparing to teach the fool a lesson for picking on your friend. As soon as you raise your wand though, Snape’s hand darts out and lowers your arm.
“Malfoy,” Professor Snape says to him coldly, completely ignoring the fact that yiu were just about to curse him, but keeping his hand on top of your arm, to dissuade you from getting any further ideas of revenge, “I will not tolerate you bullying other students in my class. There is nothing silly about Miss Smith’s name. Lily is a beautiful name. It is derived from the Latin, Lilium meaning purity and innocence. And as for her heritage, we do not know that her parents are Muggles. She has been sorted into Slytherin House, and for all we know she could be the heir to Slytherin himself.”
Draco is suddenly silent and looking at his feet, afraid to meet Snape’s stare. Even his goons Crabbe and Goyle have stopped grinning.
“As Lily is a member of House Slytherin, I will not punish your house by deducting points. You can join me for detention at the end of the day instead.”
Draco looks angry, but can’t do anything about it. As soon as the lesson is finished, you rush over to Lily to check she’s ok. She says she’s ok, but she seems quite sad and subdued.
What do you do next?
