You head into your Defence Against the Dark Arts Class with Lily, following Lavender and Hermione. The Monster, who had been sleeping, seems to stir, and merely laughs at the thought of the Dark Arts class.
There isn’t a single thing we can learn in this class that I don’t already know girl. If you wish to learn of the Dark Arts, I am the finest teacher you could ever hope for
It’s Defence against the Dark Arts
The Monster merely laughs.
For a moment, you wonder if the monster will leave you be for the lesson again, but then you see your teacher, a nervous man wearing a purple turban, and the Monster suddenly wakes right up again.
You head toward the front of the class, where the teachers pet Hermione is sitting. Then you see that Harry Potter and a bunch of idiot Gryffindors are sitting there with Hermione, and you decide to sit elsewhere. The headaches that you get in proximity to the boy can be quite excruciating. You pull on Lily’s sleeve and the two of you sit at the back of the class instead. Unfortunately, Draco Malfoy is sitting there, with his goons Crabbe and Goyle.
“You’re not going to have any more nightmare are you Emily?” Draco taunts you cruelly.
You snap out your wand and point it at his face.
“You’re not going to have any more blood in your body if you don’t shut up Draco,” you hiss at him.
“You wouldn’t dare,” says Draco, looking disgusted but also uncertain.
“Oh wouldn’t I?” You reply to him, “Do you know the exsanguination curse Draco? I assure you I’m not making this one up. It drains the blood from your body until you’re just a withered husk. It’s so rare, they didn’t even know about it to make it unforgivable, but they should have.”
Draco says nothing, but glares back at you. He is another one who is not as afraid of you as he should be.
The teacher struggles to get the class to settle, so nervous is his disposition. You roll your eyes at the man’s incompetence. If it were not for his obscuration of his own magical aura and soul-pattern, you would sleep and let the girl sit through this lesson. Taking advantage of the hubbub of the students taking so long to settle, you quickly cast Revelio Magicae and Revelio Anima. As before, the man’s aura and soul are completely blank. He also doesn’t appear to have any magical items, such as your Ring, although perhaps he has obscured those auras too.
How has someone so incompetent learned a spell as rare as Obscurus Anima?
You spend the lesson half listening and half thinking. The man’s lesson is useless. He has some basic theoretical understanding, but despite his tales of travelling in Eastern Europe, he hasn’t a clue what he is talking about. His talk of Hags and Vampire and Zombies is all theoretical. If he actually met one of those creatures you have no doubt he would die of fright.
Your ears prick up when he mentions Albania. He had travelled there supposedly. In your timeline, you spent some time there before possessing one of your followers. Could he be a Death Eater in this timeline? Would your other self trust someone this incompetent? Clearly someone has hidden this man’s soul, and you don’t think it was him.
But then again, Dumbledore and Snape have obscured their souls also.
Perhaps… could he be a murderer? Might he have damaged his soul by killing, and doesn’t want an onlooker to see the tears and rends caused by such a crime? Might this be the reason why Dumbledore and Snape have obscured their souls? Certainly those two would be capable of murder.
You decide to ask Bellatrix if Snape or Quirrell are loyal. You won’t ask if they are Death Eaters, as that would reveal to her your imperfect knowledge of this timeline.
You are just about to settle and sleep when you feel something. Quirrell has instructed the class to read in silence, and you feel his eyes on you. Then you feel his mind, intruding into yours. You see him seeing your fake thoughts of boys and Quidditch and realise the swine is using Legimens to try and read your mind. You quickly prepare an Occlumens defence but hold back, not using it, waiting to see if he falls for your Psyche Obfuscatus. The very fact that he could slip past your mind shielding spell speaks of his skill - Protego Psyche is a powerful spell. You prepare your will to fight his by employing the Occlumens, but then realise that even if you fight his mind off, your inner strength will be revealed. This dog must have looked at you and seen no magical aura, and no soul, and concluded that you were more powerful that you appear!
He slips past your false memories and tries to delve deeper, seeing your passion for Lily but also sensing your fear. You reach for your will and prepare to fight him, but then you notice a large tree outside of an open window. You whisper a spell under your breath and point your wand at it under your desk.
“Confringo” you hiss, as quietly as you can.
The tree explodes in shower of leaves, twigs and branches. Birds who were roosting in it are rudely thrown into the air, squawking and flapping their wings. The sound of the explosion causes every child in the room to rush to the windows and start talking excitedly. Quirrell’s concentration is broken, and you don’t have to use your willpower to fight off his mind. Your secret is hidden, but he knows you are hiding something, just as you know he is.
The Professor himself moves to the window to see what had happened. You cast a quick Interitus spell on the wooden lectern he was standing at, and when he finally returns to it, it collapses with dry rot, causing him to fall through it, to the general hilarity of the class. Taking advantage of his shock and distraction, you reach into his mind, finding shock, embarrassment, shame, and beneath that, white hot rage. This man hates being laughed at. You quickly pull your tendrils from his mind, before you are noticed, but think you sense a mind shield there, no doubt to protect him from the Imperious curse. Someone has taught this man some powerful magics, or placed them upon him.
The bell rings for the end of the lesson, and you scarper away with Lily before he can lay his eyes on you again. He is one to beware of.
