WORK IN PROGRESS, NOT FINISHED YET

The final class of the day is one you’ve been really looking forward to; Broom Flying. The Monster, who has been bored all day, seems to have gone to sleep, meaning you can finally enjoy yourself, even though you feel exhausted. You love flying, and remember when Henry first taught you to fly your broomstick on the grounds of Lestrange Manor, as well as the private flying lessons you were given at great expense. Now, you are finally at Hogwarts, and might even get to play Quidditch!

You and Lily arrive with Lavender and Hermione, only to notice that all of the rest of the first year Slytherins are already there. Draco Malfoy stares at you, and whispers something to Oansy Parkinson, who laughs as if it were the funniest joke in the world. It’s very sneaky of them to arrive first, and take all the best brooms no doubt. It doesn’t matter to you, as you have your mother’s old broom that you learned to fly on. You’re more concerned that the other Slytherins agreed to arrive early and didn’t tell you and Lily.

“Draco and I have been on holiday in Switzerland,” Pansy says loudly, showing off to anyone who cares to listen, “we flew all over the valleys and mountains. My mother bought me a Nimbus 1700, it’s the fastest broom in the school!”

The other students seem impressed, and Pansy seems ecstatic telling everyone how much time she’s spent with Draco. As you and the other students approach, she turns to you and looks at your dusty old broom in disgust.

“Couldn’t you get a better broomstick Emily?” She asks in a mocking false sympathy, “that one is so old and ugly.”

“Oh, like your home then?” You snap back at Pansy, wondering why she’s being such a bitch.

Pansy’s jaw drops, and she just gapes at you speechless for a moment.

“This is my mother’s broom, and she flew in the Slytherin House Quidditch Team. It’s good enough for me,” you tell her.

“Are you hanging out with Gryffindor Mud-bloods now Emily?” Sneers Malfoy, looking at Hermione, who gets upset and looks away.

“Hermione’s parents might be Muggles, but she’s learning magic better than you are Malfoy,” you taunt him back, “Power is more important than blood anyway. Oh, how’s your head? Do you want me to levitate you again? I hope you don’t fall off your broom.”

Draco looks as if he’s about to say something, but then your teacher arrives and silences you all with her stern manner.

“Quiet now students,” Madam Rolanda Hooch commands, “Broom flying is a serious business, and can be very dangerous if you don’t take it seriously and follow my instructions. Now, firstly I’d like you to all step forward and find yourselves a broom, if you haven’t one already. Do NOT mount your broom or attempt to fly it until I tell you to begin. Is that understood?”

All the children say yes, and she invites you to step forwards and take a broom. You step up as well, to ensure Lily gets a decent school broom. As you do so, Lily tugs on your sleeve and whispers something in your ear.

“Emily,” she whispers fiercely, “something’s going to happen, something bad!”

You look back at her, puzzled for a moment, but just smile confidently. You adore Lily but she is so anxious.

“Good,” Madam Hooch says loudly, “now, line up and lay your brooms on the floor in front of you. Yes, that’s good, spread out a little more. Ok. Now, on my command, I want you to hold out your hand and say up to summon your broom to your hand.”

You say “Up” and your broom snaps into your hands, as is has hundreds of times before. Lily and some of the others struggle a little bit, but after a minute or so, all of the pupils are holding their brooms. You look at Lily, and see how worried she looks.

Lily looks anxious about something

“Don’t worry, you’ll be ok,” you tell her.

“Do you all have your brooms?” Madam Hooch enquires, “Good. Now, when I blow my whistle, I want you to mount your broom, kick off good and hard, rise a few feet into the air, and then bring your broom to a well controlled stop, landing again safely.”

When she blows her whistle, you do exactly as she says, controlling your broomstick with ease, making sure as you do so to keep an eye on Lily, and reaching out to steady her balance. She does well, controlling her broom, despite her natural tendency to clumsiness.
